Plasson Broiler Drinker Review

The Plasson broiler drinker has significantly reduced the amount of time we have had to spend maintaining our broiler meat chickens. Working homesteaders have to find ways to reduce the amount of time they spend with each animal in order to keep producing. We struggled with different waterers and coming up with the right solution and the Plasson broiler drinker solved that for us. It is originally made for commercial operation settings which may turn some people off. While commercial chicken operations are less than ideal they have perfected the efficiency of raising birds. There’s no harm in using some of their hard-earned experience to develop our own operations.

How to Setup

First, you need to purchase the Plasson broiler drinker. We purchased ours here from QC Supply. A portable chicken tractor is usually not attached to or even near a water source. Therefore these waterers are the ideal set up on a gravity feed system with a 5-gallon bucket.

Items you need:

Drill a hole in the bottom of your bucket just big enough for the bulkhead fitting. Screw bulkhead tightly onto the bucket, and attach male threaded fitting. The Plasson Broiler Drinker from QC Supply comes with the tubing you need to attach to the barbed fitting. You can cut the tubing so it fits in your scenario, but remember to leave enough to allow for movement. Our chicken tractors have lids that need to lift so the bucket goes on the ground while moving the tractor, you don’t want to disconnect the tubing every time you move your chicken tractors.

Plasson Broiler Drinker set up

Now to set up the drinker on your tractor, fill the black ballast on the bottom of the drinker with water, this makes sure they hang level and do not blow around in wind or get knocked by the birds. Now put everything back together and hang the drinker with included hook and cord. Put the tubing through the wire or hole on your chicken tractor and attach it to the 5-gallon bucket. Now, remember this is a gravity set up so all of the extra tubing and bucket need to be above the waterer, for us that is on the lid. Also do not put the bucket lid on tight or it will create a vacuum, that will not allow the flow of water. We put it on just enough that it won’t blow off and keeps debris out of the water.

Pros

  • Adjustable height as birds grow
  • Constant flow of freshwater
  • Black tubing stays algae free
  • Thaws quickly
  • All parts can be purchased separately if broken
  • Can be taken completely apart for repairs and cleaning
  • 25 birds can easily drink all at the same time

Cons

  • Freeze easily (the tubing has frozen up on mornings that are just below freezing)
  • Gravity system (not always convenient depending on your setup)
  • Price (this deterred us for a long time)
  • Heavy (with a full ballast they are heavy to hang off of the wire and your wire may need some reinforcement)

Stop Wasting Time

Stop wasting time trying to figure out simpler cheaper systems. I truly believe there’s always that point of sacrifice we all have to make. This is one. We have done poultry cups, upside-down buckets in a tray, and even open buckets, This is by far the best option. These drinkers stay clean, the water stays fresher, and there’s no messy filling. We will be switching all of our waterers to the Plasson Broiler Drinker as the budget allows.
